Sacrificial Love – Mardi Gras Style

Posted: August 24, 2012 in Wicked Pissah

Last weekend we took another kayaking trip down the salt river. Although when we planned it a month ago we didn’t realize it fell on Mardi Gras. If you’ve ever been down the salt river, you’ve seen the craziness that are the tubers, but put that on Mardi Gras and it’s just a whole new ballgame. Here is a sample of what a typical group of tubers looked like.

Here was our favorite contraption that we saw. They were blaring Michael Jackson music and you can actually be on the platform but in the water by sitting in the middle cutout of the platform. These guys were creative!

The whole day we heard and saw crazy things. The best line we heard all day was from a girl saying to another girl…

“Hey if you let my husband touch your boobs, I’ll give you a set of my beads”.

Now THAT”S sacrificial love (in a crooked way) 🙂  What does biblical sacrificial love look like?

The Greek word agape (ag-AH’-pay ) is often translated “love” in the New Testament. How is “agape love” different from other types of love? The essence of agape love is self-sacrifice. Unlike our English word “love,” agape is not used in the Bible to refer to romantic or sexual love. Nor does it refer to close friendship or brotherly love, for which the Greek word philia is used.

Sacrificial love is not based on a feeling, but a determined act of the will, a joyful resolve to put the welfare of others above our own.

But this type of love does not come naturally to humans. Because of our fallen nature, we are incapable of producing such a love. If we are to love as God loves, that love (agape) can only come from its true Source.

A good well known story in the bible about agape love is the good Samaritan. Take a moment to read this story (even if you have many times) but this time focusing it through the lens of agape sacrificial love.

Formula of the Week

Beads for boobs < the good Samaritan

Question of the Week

Whats the most unique instance of agape love you’ve witnessed or been a part  in your life?

Too funny Dan! Sacraficial love on the Salt river’s Mardi Gras ….. I bet that wife was looking to have her husband do it more for her own twisted gratification viewing pleasure than even his own. Hey, I’m with ya, I’m thinking that the Good Samaritan indeed wins out on this one. The day was an amusing adventure that also allowed us to test all of our strategic kayaking navigational maneuvers through the hoards of tubers.

That is a good one! I have one that might interest you. Yesterday I was on my lunch break waiting in line to get something from the deli at Fred Meyers grocery store. This man two people in front of me fell to the floor the couple in front of me caught him so he wont hit his head. The man,Daniel started shaking and foaming at the month then his heart stopped I called for an employee to bring an IED and hooked it up to him and got his heart started again. The couple stayed and helped talk to Daniel and hold his head until help got there which seemed to take forever maybe 10 min. The man Daniel had a cell phone in his pocket I called the first number which was his grand daughter she had her mom call me which was his daughter, she said her dad was a very health man and she was on her way and was very appreciative for the help. When all was said and done just my self and the couple in front of me were the only people who reacted to help this man who needed help. I was surprise to see the on lookers but know one really wanted to get involved.I am thankful God didnt do that to us, He didnt just look on, he reaches out his hand daily. Well anyways Dan that is my 2 cents. Two times this week God has put me in the right place at the right time! When God speaks do we react? Love ya, Penny

Wow great story Penny. Actually i’m so freaked out by health things like that or anything that has to do with blood I might have passed out and wouldn’t have been much help. I’d call for help from my phone, but might not be too much help either.

Now that would be even weirder if she was allowing that for her own needs. Then it wouldn’t have been sacrificing after all lol…. Thanks for sharing
