Homeless Help

This is too heartwarming not to share. Easter Sunday was Denise and I’s 1st anniversary. Instead of getting each other a gift we bought 125 homeless people Easter meal at the Phoenix Rescue Mission. We went there and served them the meals as well and it was quite an experience. While we were there, I sat down and got to know a homeless person named Scott. He was down and out on his luck and had been homeless for a couple years. He was a Directv installer barely making ends meet when someone stole his truck with all his tools in it. You need to have your own tools and truck to do the job since DirecTV just subcontracts the installers out. That caused him to be homeless.

Over the last few months he has gotten close to the tipping point of getting his life back on track. He got a job with DirecTV again and is at the end of a 2 week training session. He has a lot of experience but is learning a lot since technology has changed so much even in the last 2-3 years. He sold his car and used it as a down payment on a commercial van that he now sleeps in. He doesn’t get paid during training and even the gas money to get to the jobs has been hard to keep up with.  At the end of training he can be making money right away but needs the tools to go out on jobs. Today at lunch time Denise and I met him at Lowe’s and got him the critical tools that he needs to get going. Attached is the picture of us in front of his white van with the largest item (a cordless 18V hammer drill).  He is a couple weeks away of getting his first check since he now has the tools. He can begin to make payments on the van and thinks he will be in an apartment and no longer homeless within a month!

After Lowe’s we invited him over the house for dinner since our small group was coming over tonight and thought it would be a good positive group to be around. It was a cool evening and lots of story sharing.

I just thought it was cool to see someone who was close to getting his life back on track and how we were placed in his path on purpose to help him out.

2 Corinthians 9:11 You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

(Notice it doesn’t say “rich in finances”. It says “rich in every way”.

Dan – I am new to following your blog. This story is very nice – do you still have contact with Scott?

      Scott,
I stayed in contact with him for a while after that event. I haven’t been able to get ahold of him over the last 2 months though. I hope he is still on track!
